The Redhawk M22122 is a highly integrated, two-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet media access controller (MAC) device targeted for full rate and oversubscribed local area network (LAN) trunking, security, and aggregation applications. The Redhawk supports two, user selectable, types of line interfaces: XFI and XAUI. The device includes two 10 Gbps Ethernet MACs, oversubscription logic, and two options for system side interfaces: OIF SPI-4.2 and XAUI. A single Redhawk device supports one or two port full rate and two port 2:1 oversubscribed applications. In addition two Redhawk devices can be gluelessly cascaded for four port 4:1 oversubscribed solutions.
Two Port 10G Ethernet MAC with Multi-protocol Congestion Management
The Redhawk is a 2-port 10GE intelligent MAC with embedded XFI, XAUI and SPI-4.2 interfaces, traffic classification
and multi-protocol congestion management. The device facilitates aggregation of multiple 10 Gbps Ethernet ports,
with a single device aggregating up to two ports for line rate or statistically multiplexed applications. Two devices
can be daisy-chained together to expand aggregation to four ports. The Redhawk is specifically targeted for 10 Gbps
Ethernet aggregation applications in Ethernet switching, routing, Ethernet over SONET, security appliances and storage
networks.
Today’s 10 Gbps Ethernet network connections, on average, operate at a fraction of available bandwidth. However,
equipment that aggregates Ethernet links, such as switches and routers, is designed for continuous full link utilization.
This disparity results in increased equipment costs and reduced number of customers served per system. To maximize
revenue per system, a statistically multiplexed solution must be used.
The Redhawk delivers intelligent statistical multiplexing for Ethernet networks. A single device aggregates two 10
Gbps ports and two seamlessly daisy-chained devices aggregate four ports to a highly utilized system data path. A
sophisticated classification algorithm, along with MDRR based oversubscription algorithms, prioritize traffic based
on VLAN, MPLS, MAC address and type of service. This results in high priority traffic always getting through to packet
processors. In addition, the Redhawk intelligently handles lower priority traffic when there is traffic congestion. The
resulting system-level solution reduces per port hardware costs over 40%.
